It s an old one with no adjustments so i cleaned it up good.
Soot from gas hot water heater does.
Build up or debris can get caught in the burner disrupting the proper flow of gas.
For some crazy reason spiders like propane.
Propane furnaces normally burn clean.
The water heater on my rv keeps putting out black smoke soot staining the sides of the motorhome.
From time to time furnaces do need to be cleaned but soot buildup is usually not a problem.
These molecules are colorless and they cannot be seen by the naked eye.

So i took the new rv out with the family and at the end of the overnight stay at the campground still getting used to rving i saw there is a black stain on the outside of the water heater.

Most likely there is a spider nest in it.
Also there is a safety valve on your propane tank if you open it to quickly have a cable bill and it will not open and work properly so always open slowly.
Can i turn on my gas hot water heater just for a few seconds to check the flame.
